Rated one of the best hikes in National Geographic Adventure magazine, the Zion Narrows is the slot canyon to which all other slot canyons are compared. The North Fork of the Virgin River follows a serpentine path carved by the water over millions of years and passes over waterfalls, deep green pools, and dark, secret alcoves. Majestic canyon walls rise up vertically 1,500-feet while beams of sunlight highlight this spectacular gorge dotted with sandstone grottos and hanging gardens.
Starting from Chamberlain's Ranch northeast of Zion National Park, we'll hike the North Fork 16-miles over 2-days. Please note this is a very strenuous river hike - 60% of our time will be spent walking in chilly water, which may be anywhere from ankle- to waist-deep! Some swimming may also be necessary. When not in the water, we'll be on rocks and sandbars next to the river. So expect to get wet. Because of the foregoing, the Narrows is considered an advance-level hike.
This trip will start with a meet-up in Pasadena at 10:00AM on Friday. We'll carpool/caravan the 7- to 8-hour drive to Zion National Park and camp locally. Early Saturday morning we'll catch a 2-hour shuttle to the trailhead and begin our river hike. This first day of hiking we'll cover approximately 9-miles before reaching our designated campsites. Day 2 will cover another 7-miles but over much more difficult and frequent obstacles. We'll finish the trail at the Temple of Sinawava where we'll board a shuttle back to our cars before driving home. Expect to get back home late Sunday night.
Members will have to provide their own camping gear, a recommended list of which will be provided on request. In addition to your usual hiking/camping gear, all participants should bring: dry bags for all of your gear, water filter and/or purifying tablets, trekking poles, and personal first aid kit. Neoprene socks and very sturdy hiking shoes with ankle support and solid grips are also highly recommended.
