III.  ADVENTURE CLUB

III.  ADVENTURE CLUB

A.  MEMBERSHIP IN THE EXTREMETHINGS ADVENTURE CLUB

1.   What is the eXtremethings Adventure Club?

The Extremethings Adventure Club is southern California's newest and most exciting social club catering to active and adventurous adults.  Our activities vary from week to week and might include hiking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, paintball, yoga on the beach, skiing or surfing lessons (depending on the season).  Activities take place in and around Los Angeles, usually within a 40-minute drive of downtown, and are generally discounted 10% to 30% for our group.  The goal of the Club is to get people off the couch, have them reconnect with nature, and meet other fun, interesting people that actually do stuff.

To register as a Member of the eXtremethings Adventure Club of Southern California, please click here.

2.   What are the benefits of joining the Club?

With you're paid membership, you can participate in any or all of our weekly group events listed in our Calendar of Events and take advantage of special Member Savings on other activities or purchases with our preferred vendors.  In addition, you'll receive a complimentary one-year subscription to National Geographic Adventure magazine.

3.   What is the cost of membership?

For a limited time, cost of an Annual Adventure Club Membership is just $49.00!  With you're paid membership, you can participate in any or all of our weekly group events (see our online Calendar), take advantage of special Member Savings on other activities or purchases with our preferred vendors, and you'll receive a complimentary one-year subscription to National Geographic Adventure magazine.

4.   How do I register for membership?

Registration is easy!  Simply click on the Become A Member tab at the foot of any page on our website.  Read the information provided on the page and, when you're ready, add an Annual Membership to your shopping cart located at the bottom of the page.  From there, just follow the check-out procedures, supplying your email address, name, phone number and mailing address, where directed.  You'll also be required to choose a password and read and accept the Member Terms & Conditions, before your credit card details are accepted and charged.

5.   What if I don't like the Club, can I get a refund of my money after joining?

You generally have 30-days after you join to opt out of your Adventure Club Membership.  However, we can only refund up to $25.00 of your membership fee because of the initial costs we incur in setting up your membership.

6.   What are the criteria for joining the Adventure Club?

The Extremethings Adventure Club is an adult social organization, and so the only criteria we have is that you be at least 18 years of age prior to joining the Club.

7.   Is the Adventure Club for singles?

No, the Adventure Club is not a singles organization, although many people have made connections with other members in the Club.  A number of our members are married or have significant others who are also active in the Club.  After all, couples that play together, stay together!

Our activities are bonding experiences and so it is quite common for our members to form life-long friendships with other Club members or for couples to have their existing relationships strengthened after participating in Club-sponsored events.

8.   How many members are in the Club?

We have over 900 registered members in the Club, with more and more people joining every week.

9.   What's the age range of members in the Club?

We have members ranging from 18 to 60+ years of age.  Most people fall in the 25 to 34 years age bucket.

10.  Can I become a member if I don't live in or around Los Angeles?

Yes, although you probably wont have much opportunity to participate in our sponsored group activities.  In any event, you can still take advantage of the numerous discounts and savings offered exclusively to our Club members.  To view the Member Savings section of our website, click on the Member Savings icon at the top of any webpage on our site.

11.  I think I am already a member, but I don't know for sure.  How do I find out?

Adventure Club members have registered their contact information with us using our online membership form.  If you have never filed-out an online registration form, then chances are, you are not yet a member.  If, however, you're not sure if you filled-out our registration form, you can try to login by clicking My Account, which is at the top of every webpage on our site.  Failing to log into My Account, is a pretty good indication that you are not yet a registered member of the Adventure Club.

Note:  We use your email address as your unique identifier, and during the registration process you assigned a password associated with that email address.  If you do not remember your password, you can have it emailed to the address we have on record for you.  Click here to have your password emailed to you.

12.  I receive your emails about Club activities all the time, doesn't that make me a member?

Not necessarily.  Adventure Club members have registered their contact information with us using our online membership form.  However, the Club does allow anyone who has an interest in our organization to subscribe to our email newsletters without first becoming a member.  So if you are receiving our emails but cannot login to RSVP for Club activities, chances are, you are not yet a registered member.  Non-members receive our newsletters because they either signed up on our homepage to receive updates from us or they may be cross-listed with another social club that receives our mailings.

B.  PARTICIPATING IN CLUB ACTIVITIES

1.   In what kinds of activities does the Club participate?

From rock climbing to scuba diving lessons, and from bungee jumping to wine tasting socials, the Adventure Club does it all!  Our activities vary from week to week so you'll never get bored.

Some recently scheduled activities include:

  • Firearms Training & Safety
  • Skydiving
  • Surfing Lessons
  • Hiking / Orienteering
  • Whitewater Rafting
  • Bungee Jumping
  • Yoga on the Beach
  • Canyoneering
  • Whale Watching
  • Indoor & Outdoor Rock Climbing
  • Drag Racing
  • Self-Defense Training

Activities are generally for the novice or beginner in a chosen sport, but if you have prior knowledge or expertise in an activity, we can usually tailor elements of it to suit your experience.

Additionally, there are several subgroups of members who get together and organize more frequent gatherings for those with more narrow interests in particular activities.  For instance, we have members who gather together frequently for Paintball, or Canyoneering, or Scuba Diving for those who are certified in that sport.

In this way, the Extremethings Adventure Club is also a Runners Club, a Ski Club, a Hiking Club, and a Bike Club all at once.  If you have a particular interest or expertise, chances are you'll find others in the Club who share your passion.

2.   How much does the Club's activities cost?

It really depends on the activity.  For instance, our weekly Hiking activities are free to Club members.  A Yoga or Self-Defense course will generally be discounted to $10 or $15 per person.  But Tandem Skydiving may cost as much as $180 (at the discounted rate).

The more members we have on record, the greater the discount we're able to negotiate for an activity, but generally, our group events come with a 10% to 30% discount.

3.   Where do the activities generally take place?

Adventure Club activities generally take place in and around Los Angeles, usually within a 40-minute drive of downtown.  On occasion, however, we will schedule activities that take place in Joshua Tree (rock climbing), Kernville (whitewater rafting), Mammoth Mountain (skiing & snowboarding), or other locations in and around San Diego, Ventura, or Santa Barbara.

4.   How many people generally participate in a Club activity?

This really depends on the activity.  We may have 15 or more people participate in a hiking or mountaineering excursion, or just 3 or 4 participating in a skydive.  But on average, we'll have 6 to 8 people per activity.

5.   Are all of the Club's activities "extreme?"

The "extreme" in our name is a bit of a misnomer because the majority of our activities are not heart-pounding, thrill-seeking, adrenalin-inducing action sports.  Although we do embrace these activities and lifestyle, AND want to help bring about the mainstreamization (real word!) of action sports, our adventure organization is more of a health & fitness conscious social club for folks who like the outdoors and experiencing different activities.

The majority of our scheduled events might include such non-extreme activities as skiing, paintball, hiking, beach yoga, whale watching, salsa dance lessons, surfing lessons, wine tasting socials, etc.

But make no mistake, we do engage in skydiving, bungee jumping, kiteboarding, and similar activities, but generally, only once a month.

6.   How much experience do I need to have in order to participate in Club activities?

Activities are generally for the novice or beginner in a chosen sport, but if you have prior knowledge or expertise in an activity, we can usually tailor elements of it to suit your experience.

Please note:  With respect to certain activities, Scuba Diving, for instance, you must be a certified scuba diver prior to attending one of our trips.  The only exception is if certification or lessons are offered as part of the event.

7.   How do I find out about Club activities?

All of our Club activities are posted on our website under the heading labeled Calendar, which is found at the top of any page on our website.  Additionally, we email our Calendar of Events newsletter to our members and newsletter subscribers on a monthly basis, giving them a heads up on Club activities for the upcoming month.  You can subscribe to our email newsletter by entering your information in the email box on the homepage of our website.  Note, however, that subscribers are not registered members and thus, will not be allowed to participate in Adventure Club sponsored-activities unless and until they register for membership.

8.   Can I invite my friends to participate in Club activities?

As a member, you may bring as many guests as you like to a Club sponsored activity.  However, each guest may attend only one (1) event per year.  Prior to attending their second Club activity, your guests are expected to register and pay for their Membership.  Guests are also expected to abide by the same rules of conduct as any member (see the Member Terms & Conditions), and to accept full responsibility and liability for their participation in Club events.

If you are planning to bring a guest, we'll request that you provide us with their name, phone number, and other information prior to the attending the Club event.

9.   I'm not yet sure I want to join the Adventure Club.  Can I come to one of your events to see if I like it?

Absolutely!  Just let us know which event you'd like to attend and we will forward to you the activity details including meeting location, what to bring or wear, and the cost per person (if any).  However, we will ask you to read and sign a Waiver and Release of Liability form, and to abide by Club's Rules of Conduct found in our Member Terms & Conditions.  Also, please note that you will only be able to attend one (1) Club event as a non-member.  Prior to attending your second Club event, you are expected to register and pay for membership.

C.  MAKING A RESERVATION FOR A CLUB ACTIVITY

1.   How do I RSVP for a Club activity?

RSVP-ing for a Club activity is easy.   Every Club-sponsored activity has an Event Details page accessible directly from our online Calendar.  To RSVP for an event, click on the button that says, "RSVP for this Event Now" located at the bottom of the Event Details page.  If you are not logged in, you will be asked to do so.  Once you log in, you will be asked to accept the Waiver and Release of Liability form.  Once you accept the waiver and liability form, your reservation is complete.

Please note:  in some cases, an activity may require a credit card deposit.  In that case, the deposit amount will be added to your shopping cart and you will be led through our automated checkout procedures.  Your reservation will not be confirmed until after your credit card is processed.

Once you're RSVP is complete, further details regarding your chosen event will be emailed to you 48 hours prior to the date of the activity.

2.   Can I RSVP for myself and my friend(s)?

No, every member must RSVP individually.  If you are bringing guests to a Club event, you must notify us at the time of your RSVP with the number of guests you're bringing and the full name and telephone number of each guest.

3.   What if I need to cancel my RSVP?

You may cancel your reservation for a Club activity at any time for any reason (or no reason at all) by emailing us at info@extremethings.com.  There are two exceptions to this rule:

1.        Habitual Cancellers and Serial RSVPers Who No-Show are the bane of our Club and will not be tolerated.  A number of our activities have a ceiling on the number of participants and your RSVP may be preventing others from participating in the event.  For this reason, habitual cancellers, no-shows, and people to cancel late will run the risk of losing their membership without refund.

2.        Activities Requiring Deposit or Pre-Payment cannot be cancelled without forfeiting the deposit/payment amount.  The only exception is if we can find other paying Members to take the place of the canceling party, in which case, a full refund, less a 10% processing fee, will be provided.

D.  ORGANIZING AND COORDINATING A CLUB ACTIVITY

1.   Can I coordinate an activity?

Yes, existing members can post an activity in our Calendar and organize events for other members.

2.   How do I post my activity in the Calendar of Events?

Simply, click on the "Post An Activity" button at the top of the Calendar page and follow the instructions for submission.  Please allow at least 48 hours for our Calendar Administrator to review the event details you submit and approve it for the Calendar.  Once your event is approved, it will be posted in the Calendar for the specified date(s).  When members RSVP for your event, you will receive an email with their contact details.

When posting an event, make sure you have all the relevant information that would enable people to make an informed decision on whether or not to RSVP and participate.  For instance, you will need to include the date and time of your event, general location, cost per person (if any), skill level, what members need to bring or wear, etc.

3.   Why should I coordinate an activity for the Adventure Club?

Want to go bungee jumping but don't want to take that leap of faith alone...?
Need a fourth and fifth person to share the hotel costs of that weekend ski trip?
Looking for a bunch of cool people to invite to your BBQ, paintball challenge, bike ride, or volleyball game?
Or if you just want to share your passion or interests with other people who'll enjoy and appreciate it?

For all these reasons (and many more), you'll want to organize and coordinate an Adventure Club activity.

4.   What do I get for coordinating activities for the Adventure Club?

You get the joy and sense of accomplishment that comes along with sharing a wonderful event with other people interested in doing the same kinds of stuff.  You will also meet new friends and develop or polish those dormant organizational and leadership skills.
