What was once an intimidating tower of sheer rock looming menacingly fifty feet above you, now begins to reveal its weaknesses—tiny cracks, crevices, chimneys and ledges highlight the route to its top. These secrets of the rock were invisible to you just four hours ago when you began the basic rock climbing course, but now you read them like glowing hieroglyphics on an ancient wall.

What is the agenda for the activity?  What can participants expect?
Rock climbing instruction covers the absolute essentials for safely climbing steep rock and is a valuable course for those wishing to pursue mountaineering.  Your climbing instruction will be provided by some of the most experienced climbers in the country, all of whom are AMGA certified.  Instruction begins at eight o’clock in the morning with extensive ground school.  You will become intimately familiar with the climbing equipment, tying knots, anchoring, belaying, communication signals and climbing lingo, rating system and climbing technique.  After the ground school each participant will get plenty of opportunity to test themselves against the rock where they will be taught “bouldering” (movement on the rock), top-rope climbing, and rappelling.  Expect a full day of climbing with a one-hour lunch break.

What should the participants bring or wear?  Is all equipment included?
All necessary climbing equipment is included such as rock shoes, helmet and technical gear.  Participants should wear comfortable clothing that allows for a complete range of movement, and bring at least one liter of water per person, sunscreen, sunglasses and lunch.  Always bring medications which you may need on any trip (i.e. asthma inhaler, bee sting kit, etc.).

How long should the participants allow for the activity from start to finish?
Rock climbing is an all-day activity.  You will meet with the climbing group at 8AM with the course ending at approximately 4PM.  There will be a one-hour break for lunch.

When and Where does the activity take place?
Your rock climbing instruction will take place in Idyllwild National Park from June to September and in Joshua Tree National Park from October to April.
