The scene is very familiar: the evil villain has escaped with the only workable parachute and you’re stuck 15,000 feet in the air onboard a plane with an unconscious (or mortally wounded) pilot and a busted radio. Fortunately for you, you’ve actually taken a real in-air flight lesson and are able to save the day!

What is the agenda for the activity?  What can participants expect?
This is not a simulated training.  This is a real flight lesson at altitude.  You take the controls while the pilot/instructor rides shotgun in the cockpit of a single-engine four-seater Piper Cherokee or Cessna 172. After an extensive ground school and airplane orientation, you will take off from the runway at over 60mph and fly the plane at altitude for the duration of the flight.

Your instructor will direct you throughout the flight and will be able to take over the controls from the co-pilot position at anytime, especially if you display any Icarus ambitions!  The instructor will also be responsible for landing the aircraft although you will get the opportunity to taxi the airplane if you demonstrate a reasonable amount of coordination with your feet.

In addition to the flight training, you will receive a Certificate of First Flight commemorating your first time at the controls, a souvenir photograph of you with the plane, and a FAA student pilot logbook signed by the instructor which may be credited as an actual flight lesson should you continue your training (credits expire in 2 years).

Please allow up to 2 hours for this experience including check-in, orientation/training, and flying time.  Duration of the flight is approximately 1-hour.

One (1) friend, relative, or moral supporter of the pilot-in-training can be accommodated on the airplane during the flight for an additional $50 for the 1-hour flight.

What should the participants bring or wear?  Is all equipment included?
All equipment is included.  We recommend you dress comfortably, and sunglasses if you are sensitive to the sun.  During winter we suggest warmer clothing, layered.  The temperature at altitude is usually cooler. Please bring with you any medications you might need on any trip (e.g. asthma inhaler, etc.).  Don’t forget your camera!

How long should the participants allow for the activity from start to finish?
Please allow up to an extra half-hour for this experience including check-in, orientation/training, and flying time.  The duration of the flight is approximately 1-hour, depending on the package selected.

When and Where does the activity take palce?
Flight Training takes place at the Van Nuys Airport, just 25 minutes northwest of downtown Los Angeles.  Flights can be scheduled at any departure time between 9AM and 4PM.

Are there any restrictions (age, weight, health, etc.)?
Women who are pregnant should not fly.  People weighing over 200 pounds should notify us before making their reservations.  Pilots-in-Training should be at least 12 years of age.

Can spectators be accommodated?
Spectators and guests are welcome, but only one (1) friend, relative, or moral supporter of the Pilot-in-Training can be accommodated in the airplane during the flight for an additional charge of $50 for the 1-hour flight.

Can minors participate?
Persons under 18 years of age must be brought in to the office by a parent or guardian.

Can persons with disabilities be accommodated?
Participants must be in fair physical condition to participate in this introductory flying experience.  Persons with certain physical limitations may not be able to participate in this experience.

Can large groups or corporate events be accommodated?
Because of the limited number of available seats on the aircraft, large groups cannot be accommodated.

Are there any availability or timing restrictions?
The Flight Training course is available seven days a week at any appointment time between 9AM and 4PM.  Please allow up to an extra half-hour for this experience including check-in, orientation/training, and flying time.  Duration of the flight is approximately 1-hour, depending on the package selected.  This experience is offered year-around, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
