Canyoneering is perhaps the greatest wilderness sport on earth. In southern California, it involves hiking up mountains and then rappelling down beautiful waterfalls. At its best it may also require bushwhacking, anchor building, rock climbing or scrambling, and swimming, wading, or treading water over short distances. How cool is that? Whatever your skill level our world class instructors can take you on a guided wilderness tour or teach you the most technical aspects of this popular sport.

Introduction (Full-Day) Glendora, California $135.00

What is the agenda for the activity?  What can participants expect?
During your Canyoneering adventure you will receive a comprehensive rappelling instruction and learn basic belaying, gear usage, and climber communication and signals.  This is an all day activity that will involve a lot of off-trail hiking (up to 6 miles) and anywhere between 5 and 15 rappels (some wet, some dry), ranging from 12 to 120 feet.  If you are interested in the more technical aspects of canyoneering our instructors will teach you basic knots, anchor building and evaluation, and rope deployment.  Advance topics might include self-belay systems, improvised anchors, rope ascent, and canyon navigation.

Note:  if you are afraid of heights, cannot swim or don’t like to get wet, and/or hate hiking, this experience is NOT for you.

What should the participants bring or wear?  Is all equipment included?
All technical equipment such as rope, harness, webbing, helmet, and backpack will be provided.  However, participants should wear water resistant pants and jacket (with hood) or a wet suit. A hat or beanie, close-toed hiking or athletic shoes, and a fleece shirt and undergarments are also recommended.  You should bring sunglasses, sun block, lunch and at least 2 liters of water.  A change of clothes to leave in your car is a good idea.  Always bring medications which you may need on any trip (i.e. asthma inhaler, bee sting kit, etc.).

How long should the participants allow for the activity from start to finish?
This is an all-day activity.  Participants will meet with the canyoneering group at 9AM, gear up and then car caravan to the starting point of the designated canyon. You can expect to finish up by about 5PM or 6PM in the evening.  You will be tired so it is not advisable that you have another evening activity on the day of your scheduled canyon experience.  Canyoneering is a year-around activity and can be arranged for any day of the week.

When and Where does the activity take place?
Your canyoneering experience will begin at 9AM in Glendora, California (approximately 25 minutes northeast of downtown Los Angeles).  From Glendora, the group will carpool / caravan to the designated canyon starting point in the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest.  Depending on the canyon, the starting point could be anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes drive from Glendora.
